World War II veteran Carl Buchan received an honorable discharge after being wounded in the war. When Carl’s brother-in-law and army veteran Jim Lowe returned to North America, he took Carl on as a partner in 1943. For nine years they operated what was then known as Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware. Buchan bought the company from Lowe in 1952 and turned the once small company into a chain of hardware stores.
Buchan’s business flourished as the company, under his leadership, eliminated wholesalers and focused on direct business relationships with manufacturers. With more than 160,000 employees, it is the largest retailer in the world and its retail stores are spread across several countries, including Canada, Mexico and the United States.
